The Big Bang: How SpaceMaster Came About

In 1989,we created an internal system for keeping track of placements at our full-service advertising agency, which was five years old at that time. We wanted to create a complete picture of placement activity for our clients. When sales reps from publications seeking our business visited, we asked them questions that helped us refine our internal system. We encouraged our advertising clients to express their information wish lists. The more they requested, the more we refined the system.

Eventually, the visiting sales reps began to look at the system and make remarks like, "You have better information on us than we do." And finally, one asked, "Can we buy that system?"

The big boost for us came in 1990, when Folio Magazine (10/90 issue) ran an article about an advertising sales management system created by an ad agency, and how it was being used by major computer magazine publishers to run their operations. Eighty publishers called us the next week. That's how we got launched into the software business.

When we describe SpaceMaster, we always explain that it did not originate with a group of technical people or business types sitting around a table trying to come up with a product we hoped someone would need. We created something we needed with all of the knowledge and passion we had, and others discovered that they needed it, too.
